Why Did Krishna Stop the Indra Puja?A brave question that changed everything
Every year, the people of Braj performed a big Indra Puja — a worship ceremony for Indra, the god of rain and thunder. They weren’t doing it out of love for Indra. They were doing it out of fear: if we don’t worship him, he might send storms and destroy our crops and animals.
Young Krishna watched the preparations and asked his father Nanda Baba a simple but powerful question: ‘Why do we worship Indra? Govardhan hill already gives our cattle grass, water, shade, and shelter. Our own love and effort sustains us. Why give honour to fear — instead of gratitude to what truly nurtures us?’ 💚

The elders were moved by Krishna’s wisdom and agreed. They cancelled the Indra Puja and performed a grand Govardhan Puja instead — offering food, flowers, and love to the mountain. And Krishna declared something extraordinary: ‘Govardhan and I are one.’ The mountain is not separate from Prabhu — it is His own form! ⛰️

Indra’s Fury — The Biggest Storm in History!What happened when the god of rain got angry
When Indra found out that the Braj community had cancelled his puja — on the advice of a young cowherd boy — he was furious. His pride was deeply wounded. He called his most powerful storm clouds — the Samvartaka clouds that appear at the end of creation — and unleashed them on Braj.
What followed was not an ordinary rainstorm. It was apocalyptic — massive black clouds, thunder that shook the earth, lightning that split trees, floods that rose higher and higher. The animals were terrified. The people of Braj were in real danger. Everything they had could be swept away.
Think about it: Indra represents all the ‘powerful forces’ in the world that we sometimes worship out of fear — trying to please them so they don’t harm us. Business pressures, social expectations, fear of what others think. Krishna’s message: stop fearing these — I am your real protection! 💪
One Finger, One Mountain, Seven Days!The most famous image in all of Braj
Krishna walked calmly to Govardhan mountain — reached down — and lifted the entire mountain like an umbrella above Braj. On one finger. He then called all the people and animals of Braj to come shelter underneath it. They did. And for seven days and nights, while the storm raged with full fury, Krishna stood — smiling — holding Govardhan aloft. 💪
Not one person, not one animal, not one bird was left outside. The shelter was complete and total. When Prabhu protects, He protects everyone under His care. No one who came under Govardhan was harmed. The tradition says Krishna didn’t even look tired — He was playing His flute! 🎵

Seven days and nights, the storm raged. Seven days and nights, Krishna stood smiling — holding the mountain on one finger, the flute in His other hand.
Indra Surrenders — and BowsEven the god of heaven learns humility
After seven days, Indra realised his defeat. His most powerful storm clouds had been completely useless against a single cowherd boy. He withdrew his clouds. The storm ended. Krishna gently set Govardhan back down. All of Braj emerged, safe, unharmed, and full of gratitude. 🌈
Then something extraordinary happened: Indra himself descended from the heavens. He came before Krishna and bowed deeply, apologising for his arrogance. He bathed Krishna with the divine Akash-Ganga river from the heavens — this is the origin of Govardhan Abhishek. Even the lord of the heavens must bow before Prabhu. 🙏
