The Story — Why Krishna Played HoliThe joyful origin of the colours
The story goes that young Krishna came to his mother Yashoda one day, upset. "Maiya," he said, "why is Radha so fair and I am so dark? Will she ever love someone as dark as me?" Yashoda smiled and said: "Go to Radha. Colour her face in whatever colour you like — and then see if she cares about colour anymore." Krishna ran to Radha, smeared her face with colour, and she laughed with complete joy. And the first Holi was born. 💕
In Vrindavan, Krishna would play Holi with the Gopis — and it was never a small affair. He was clever and mischievous about it — appearing from unexpected directions, throwing colour on the Gopis who had been trying to get Him first, turning the whole forest of Vrindavan into a cloud of colour and laughter and joy. The Gopis would try to get back at Him and He would escape, laughing. This leela captures the most playful, joyful dimension of Krishna's love. 🎊
Phoolon ki Holi at Nathdwara — At the Haveli, the priests shower Shreenathji with fragrant flower petals — marigold, rose, jasmine — in cascading waves. The entire sanctum fills with petals and fragrance. It is unlike anything else in the world.
