Janmashtami is the birthday of Lord Krishna — celebrated on the 8th day (Ashtami) of the dark fortnight of the month of Shravan. It is the night when the Lord of the universe chose to be born as a tiny, radiant baby — in a prison cell — at midnight — during a thunderstorm. And the whole world celebrates! 🌟
In Pushtimarg, this night is one of the most sacred of the entire year. At Nathdwara, the celebrations go through the whole night — bhajans, kirtan, and the great midnight darshan. 💚
The Story — Why This Night Is So SpecialThe birth that changed everything
Krishna's parents — Devaki and Vasudeva — were imprisoned by the wicked king Kamsa. He had killed six of their children at birth. And then, at the stroke of midnight, on the 8th night of the dark fortnight — baby Krishna was born. The cell filled with divine light. The guards fell asleep. The chains on Vasudeva's wrists fell away by themselves. The prison doors swung open. 🌟
Vasudeva wrapped the baby in a basket and carried him through the flooded, storming Yamuna river. The tradition says the Yamuna's waters parted to let them through — and the divine serpent Sheshnag spread his hood over the basket to shelter the baby from the rain. Baby Krishna was placed safely with Nanda and Yashoda in Gokul — and the most beloved childhood in all of creation began. 🐍💕
Why midnight? The Lord chose the darkest moment of the darkest night to appear — to show that His light is most powerful precisely where darkness is greatest. Every Janmashtami, we stay awake until midnight to welcome Him at the exact moment He arrived. 💚
How It Is Celebrated at NathdwaraThe most sacred night at the Haveli
Evening — Shringar Darshan
Shreenathji is dressed in especially magnificent clothes and jewels. The Haveli is decorated with flowers and lights. Bhajans begin. The atmosphere builds slowly through the evening. 🌸
Night — Non-Stop Kirtan
Through the night, the Ashtachhap poets' bhajans are sung — Surdas, Kumbhandas, Paramananddas. The kirtan never stops. Thousands of devotees stand in the Haveli, singing, waiting. The energy builds and builds. 🎵
Midnight — Janm Darshan
At exactly midnight — the curtains open. Shreenathji is revealed in the most glorious darshan of the year — dressed as the newborn Lord, surrounded by flowers, lamps blazing. The entire Haveli erupts in "Jai Shreenathji! Jai Shri Krishna!" Conches blow. Bells ring. People weep with joy. 🎊
After Midnight — Maha Prasad
After the midnight darshan, special prasad is distributed — Panchamrit (milk, curd, honey, ghee, sugar), fruits, and sweets. Everyone receives the Lord's blessings before going home. 🍯

Decorate Thakorji's place — Put fresh flowers near Shreenathji's picture or svarupa. Light a small diya. Make the space as beautiful as you can. 🌸
Fast or eat light — Many devotees fast on Janmashtami and break the fast only after midnight darshan. Even eating simple food — fruits, milk — is a way of observing the day with reverence. 🥛
Sing bhajans through the evening — Listen to or sing Ashtachhap bhajans, "Jai Shreenathji" kirtan, or any bhajan you love. Keep the house full of the Lord's name. 🎵
Stay awake until midnight — At the stroke of midnight, ring a bell, blow a conch (or clap!), and say aloud: "Jai Shri Krishna! Jai Janmashtami!" Welcome the Lord on His birthday. 🎊
