Who Was Rukmini? The goddess who came as a princess
Rukmini was the princess of Vidarbha — beautiful, wise, and deeply devoted. She had heard stories of Krishna her whole life — His beauty, His grace, His leelas in Braj — and had fallen completely in love with Him through those stories alone. She had never met Him. But she knew with complete certainty: He is the one. No one else. 💕
Her powerful brother Rukmi had arranged her marriage to Shishupala — a rich, powerful king who was also a personal enemy of Krishna. Every worldly force was lined up against Rukmini: family pressure, political alliance, social expectation. The wedding was set. The guests were arriving. Time was running out. What could one princess do? 😟
The Letter — The Most Courageous Act of Bhakti The soul writing to the Lord before they have met
Rukmini did something extraordinary — she sat down and wrote Krishna a letter. She found a trusted Brahmin and sent him all the way to Dwarka with one task: place this letter in Krishna's hands. The letter was not a request. It was not a petition. It was a complete, open-hearted, fearless declaration of love and surrender. She wrote essentially: "I have heard of You. I love You. I am Yours. Come and take me. If You do not come — I will not accept this life." 🥹
"She had never met Him. But she wrote to Him as if she had always known Him — because the soul that has truly heard the Lord's name already knows Him."
What made the letter so special? Rukmini did not say "Please come if You wish" or "I hope You might consider." She wrote with complete certainty — "You are mine and I am Yours." This is called Akinchan Sharanagati — complete surrender with no condition, no backup plan, no hesitation. She burned every bridge before the Lord had even replied. 💚
Krishna Rides Through the Night The Lord's response to complete surrender
When the Brahmin placed Rukmini's letter in Krishna's hands, Krishna read it — and His face lit up with a smile. He immediately called for his chariot and his most trusted companion Balarama. He rode through the night to Vidarbha. No army, no grand procession — just the Lord riding personally to receive the soul that had surrendered completely. 🌙
Rukmini had told Krishna in her letter: "Before the wedding, I will go to the temple of Goddess Bhavani to pray. That is where you can find me." It was her one chance — the one moment she would be outside the palace. Krishna arrived exactly there. As Rukmini walked out of the temple, surrounded by her wedding procession — Krishna's chariot was waiting. He extended his hand. She stepped forward and took it. He lifted her into the chariot and they rode away. 🌟
Her brother Rukmi chased them with an army, furious at the insult. But every army he sent was defeated. Rukmi himself was defeated by Balarama — who then mercifully spared his life, though Rukmi never forgave them. The world always pursues the soul that leaves it for the Lord. But it always fails. 💚
